The announcement was made by Agriculture Secretary Brooke L.The multi-day event is intended to mark the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary by recognizing agriculture’s historical and ongoing role in the United States. The USDA says the market will provide direct market access for farmers and producers from across all 50 states.USDA officials note that the department, established during the Civil War by President Abraham Lincoln, has operated a farmers market in Washington, D.C., since 1995. This summer’s market is expected to expand participation beyond the D.C.The USDA maintains its headquarters on the National Mall and has described the location of the market as symbolic of agriculture’s place in U.S. history. The event will feature a range of vendors, including farmers, ranchers, bakers, meat processors, dairy producers, and other food-related businesses.

Walker Square farmers market makes official reopening with help from community members

Community members, with the help of two grants, organized the park's first farmers market since 2019. Milwaukee County Supervisor Caroline Gómez-Tom echoed that the market is an opportunity for growth in the community. "It's really important that we're here together today to make sure that we're fighting against the bad things that happen in our neighborhood. When we're here together we're stronger," she said. Lining the walkways of the park Sunday, vendors sold boba tea, flowers, fresh produce and juice. Some vendors familiar with Milwaukee's farmers markets, and others setting up their tables and tents for the first time.But Chang and her sister weren't the only family members at the market. Their parents, Fong Chang and Eu Xiong were selling produce and floral arrangements from their farm in New Berlin. Chang said she's been attending farmers markets with her parents since she was a little girl, and now she gets to carry on the tradition with her own stand.This was the first time the park had a farmers market since 2019 and with help from two grants, it was able to reopen.After five years and dedication from community members and Milwaukee organizations, the Walker Square farmers market made its official reopening, Sunday July 6.
